In-Character Information
Name: Madotsuki Hayashi
Series: Yume Nikki
Canon-Point: Halfway through obtaining all the effects
History: Canon offers literally no background for Madotsuki, so here's the one I've always used, interpreted from what is seen in Madotsuki's dreams.
Despite the low that she'd fallen into, Madotsuki's life before tumbling into Inova wasn't quite as traumatic as she feels it was. She was born into a less than well-off household and as such, frequently had to make do with second hand things. Clothes her cousins had grown out of, an old games console her sister no longer wanted, shoes and hair ties from thrift stores. This never bothered her and her life was mostly a happy one; her classmates were more concerned with being kids and their own trivial concerns than they were with Madotsuki's hand-me downs. Unfortunately, this changed drastically once Madotsuki began to attend high school. She was bullied and teased relentlessly by her classmates, mostly the girls, who would accuse her of wearing dirty clothes and dunk water on her, scornfully claiming that they were giving her a wash.
Not one for confrontation and certainly not used to the abuse she was receiving Madotsuki couldn't take it and began to withdraw into herself, refusing to go to school or eventually, to even leave her room. She began to suffer from anxiety and paranoia and an awful temper. Eventually, she was referred to a child therapist and prescribed medication. Both of these things worked wonders and Madotsuki began to return to her old self. In passing, one day, she mentioned to her therapist the dreams she was having -- strange, lucid dreams of huge, sprawling landscapes and distorted parodies of people she'd known. At the therapist's suggestion, she began to keep a dream diary in an attempt to understand why she was having such dreams.
Eventually, much to Madotsuki's distress, her therapist stepped down from her position, leaving poor Madotsuki alone to try and figure out how to carry on. With her mother and father unsure of what to do to help, Madotsuki began to regress into her old ways. She spent most of her days sleeping, or playing on the ancient clunky games console her sister had given her. She gradually began to sleep more, chosing to reside within her dreams rather than the harsh reality of her life.
Personality: Madotsuki is a shy, rather withdrawn young girl, who, despite the distance she tends to put between herself and other people craves their love and approval while simultaneously fearing the abuse that seems inevitable to her. She suffers from some social anxieties, born from her time at school, that can make it difficult for her to deal with some social situations. She's more comfortable in crowds than she is with one to one interaction; in a crowd, she's not the center of attention but one on one leaves her with nowhere to hide. While this problem isn't bad enough to prevent her from functioning outside her room, she is prone to being overwhelmed and can suffer panic attacks if distressed enough.
Underneath all her anxieties, Madotsuki is quite a kind-hearted girl. While it's hard to draw her out from her shell and even harder to earn her trust, once Madotsuki has made a friend, she is almost unerringly loyal. She's a little too quick to sacrifice her own happiness for someone else's and in a group, can be prone to quashing her own opinions to match those of other people's. Madotsuki craves acceptance and once she receives it, she will do everything she can to hang onto it. She won't hear a word against people she trusts; which can lead to her being easily mislead by people who haven't exactly the best of intentions.
Because of all the things she's seen in her dreams, Madotsuki isn't easily fazed when it comes to the supernatural or the just plain weird. She's seen stranger and scarier stuff inside her own head; she will, however, instinctively pinch her cheek to wake up if she's sufficiently scared or startled. She's also quite good at navigation; the world inside her dreams is huge and sprawling, so she's had to develop a skill for finding her way, or risk getting lost.

First-Person Sample:
Ksssht. Broadcasting.
... H--hello? Is anyone there? Mom? Mommy? I'm scared...
Can anyone help me? Can anyone please help me? I think-- I think I'm lost.
I'm in a field full of grass-- there's a weird stone here...
Wh--where am I?
Ending broadcast.
Third-Person Sample:
[ Wake up, write in her diary, go to sleep. It's become a routiene for Madotsuki and the predictability of her day is somewhat comforting. It's not like she never leaves her room; she has to bathe and eat sometime, but going a few days without leaving the room is an all too frequent occurance. She knows her mother will probably knock on the door in a few minutes, in an unsubtle attempt to get her to come down for dinner, so rather than rebuff her and feel guilty about it later, Madotsuki simply decides to go back to sleep.
Finishing the diary entry, she opens the back cover of the book and frowns. She's almost out of pages. Maybe she'll ask her mother for another diary.
But that can wait. For now, Madotsuki needs sleep.
Pushing her chair back from the desk, she walks unsteadily over to her bed, still drowsy from her last nap. It makes it easy to crawl into bed and pull the warm covers up over her head to block out the noise and light outside.
Deep breath. Hold it. ]
Three. Two. One.
[ And with that, she drifts off, her breathing settling into an even pattern. Hopefully, her mother won't wake her up today. ]
